The east side of the 62nd Avenue corridor
consists of a mix of publicly owned facilities such as the J.R.E. Lee
Education Center and the South Miami Senior Center, and privately owned
single family homes and townhouses. On the west side of the street there
are some vacant lots, an abandoned gas station, small office buildings,
food mart and the Community Newspaper plant all backing up to a single
family neighborhood. In addition, 62nd Avenue is a five-lane
county roadway with minimal street life, narrow sidewalks and little
landscaping.
The City of South Miami 62nd Avenue
Corridor Charrette took place on November 23, 2002 at the South Miami
Senior Center. More than sixty people participated in the process.
Designers, traffic and retail consultants and University of Miami School
of Architecture faculty and students worked with the participants to
create the recommendations that were assembled into a report. The mission
of the Charrette was: “to define a community vision that enhances the SW
62bd Avenue Corridor and preserves the livability of the adjoining
residential neighborhoods.”
