The St. John Community
Development Corporation and the St. John Baptist Church requested a design
study be undertaken to analyze the potential of an area along Northwest 3rd
Avenue, which was recommended by the Community Redevelopment Authority to
be turned into parking lots. The CUCD assembled a group of graduate
students from the Suburb and Town Design Program to study the one and a
half block area. The team developed preliminary designs for three and four
story buildings grouped around parking and courtyards with retail shops on
the ground floor and a variety of assisted living, elderly housing and
apartments above. The St. John CDC will use these drawings to demonstrate
to neighbors and City departments that this important neighborhood can be
revitalized by such combinations of residential, commercial and parking
uses and that such solutions will lead to more self-sustaining areas in
the City of Miami.
