“Reimaging the West Grove”

The University of Miami’s multidisciplinary effort has looked through the lenses of History, Architecture, Education, Communications, Law, Art, Urban Design and Psychology to develop a new way of seeing the complex community behaviors and outcomes in Coconut Grove.  The Spacemaker Press is committed to publishing a book about our work as a volume in their Landmark Series.

The purpose of this book will be:

  1. To outline the central features of this initiative.
  2. To describe the processes and partnerships between the University and the community.
  3. To describe an innovative effort to integrate practices of community development within a University curriculum
  4.  To review the opportunities and difficulties of integrating field work, service learning and classroom learning.

We have created these documents during our engagement.

  1. Living Traditions of Coconut Grove: This booklet was a compilation of coursework and approaches to addressing and familiarizing ourselves with the community.
  2. The Coconut Grove Vision Plan: An example of the efforts of the Center for Urban and Community Design to assist the community in developing a consensus of positive steps for improvement. This effort has led to recent passage by the City Council to create a new zoning overlay a “Neighborhood Conservation District” to preserve the scale and character of the area.
  3. Video: Communicate a sense of the breadth and enthusiasm of the students and the community members for the work undertaken.
  4. Newsletter: A “charrette-type” paper to acquaint citizens, neighbors, of the ongoing hopes and efforts of the project.
  5. The Law student project report. “ Communities Economic Development and Design”
