BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE:
A licensed psychologist and professor of Education and Psychology at
Lehigh University, Arnie became intensely interested in the effects of
physical environments on the elderly as he worked with his two parents,
who were victims of Alzheimer's disease. His collaboration with the
University of Miami's School of Architecture, with professors Joanna
Lombard, Frank Martinez, and Jose Szapocznik, led to his
cross-disciplinary work on architecture, behavior, and health in East
Little Havana, Florida. An expert in research and measurement, Arnie is a
learner with respect to New Urbanism, and is excited about the Knight
Fellowship and open to new ideas and perspectives.
RESEARCH INTERESTS:
Arnie has been doing research, revising theoretical models and conducting
assessments and interventions on how people interact with physical and
social environments and how these interactions differ across cultures,
since 1976. His most recent work is as CoPI on a five-year National
Institute of Environmental Health Sciences and National Institute of
Mental Health grant on the influence of architectural features of
neighborhood built environments on the cognitive functioning and mental
health of elder Hispanics in East Little Havana Florida. This grant
includes collaborators from architecture, epidemiology, psychology and
psychiatry, cross-cultural psychology, and geriatrics.
