BACKGROUND & EXPERIENCE:
Russell received his undergraduate degree in architecture from the University of
Virginia in 1968, was an American Scandinavian Foundation Fellow researching New
Towns in Europe from 1968-1969, and studied environmental design at Yale
University in 1972. Russell is a member of the Major Roads Committee of the
Memphis Chamber and sits on its Prioritization Committee. He has worked with the
city of Memphis in rewriting its local zoning, subdivision, and landscape codes
since the late 1970s and has been directly involved with the development of more
than $200 million worth of office facilities (23 major office facilities
exceeding 2.2 million square feet), from prezoning to occupancy. He directed the
planning, zoning, and development of six major mixed-use projects in excess of
2,000 acres and is working on a 600-acre mixed-use development in Franklin,
Tennessee.
RESEARCH
INTEREST:
Russell is investigating the configuration of
small-scale open space in the built environment, focusing
particularly on the history and nature of the development of squares in London
since 1700.
