December 4-6, 2003 in Miami Beach, FL

This course is an intensive introduction to New Urbanist real estate development. The core of the course consists of the Advanced Traditional Neighborhood Development II: Case Study Critiques of Built Developments seminar, co-organized by The Seaside Institution and Andres Duany. The course also introduces the scope of New Urbanist real estate development in the U.S. and abroad; the financing and feasibility of projects; aspects of "New Urbanist dealmaking"; and it examines the performance of New Urbanist projects.

Students conduct their own case study of a New Urbanist project. The course features case study presentations of the following TND projects:

  • Habersham (presented by developer Bob Turner)

  • Kentlands (presented by Kentlands' town architect Mike Watkins)

  • Mashpee Commons (presented by developer Buff Chace)

  • Southern Village (presented by developer D.R. Bryan)

  • Birkdale Village (presented by development consultant Terry Shook)

Additional presentations by:
