Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU XI), June
19-22, 2003 (Washington, D.C.)
The Knight Program Fellows and scholars attended
the Congress for the New Urbanism in Washington, D.C. The theme for this year's
conference was "Ideas to Realities: The Evolving City." In particular, the
conference focused on districts and corridors. Corridors in Washington include
the boulevard system, the waterfront, and a number of mass transportation
corridors.
In addition to attending lectures and seminars,
several Knight Program faculty members and fellows presented at the conference:
- Charles C. Bohl, Knight Program Director,
spoke on "Conventional Development versus Traditional Development: The
Differences" and participated in the session "The Second Coming of the
American Town Center."
- Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, dean of the
University of Miami School of Architecture, was a panel speaker for "Design
and Placemaking for Lifelong Health."
- Peter Brown (KF '01) delivered the concluding
address for "New Urbanism 101."
- Rick Chellman (KF '03), Rick Hall (KF '01),
and Peter Swift (KF '02) were presenters for "Boulevards and Beyond." Peter
Swift also presented "Transportation: Streets and the Pedestrian."
- Bill Gietema (KF '02) spoke on "From the
Vision to the Business Plan: Developer-Builder Relations."
- Dhiru Thadani (KF '01) moderated the plenary
session about the planning history of Washington, D.C.
- Laurie Volk (KF '02) spoke on "Housing: An
Overview of the Markets."
