Seaside, FL Seminar, March 6-9, 2003

The seminar in Seaside, the first New Urbanist town, was the last seminar for the 2002-2003 Knight Fellows and the first gathering for the 2003-2004 Fellows. The joint seminar featured guest lectures, walking tours, and presentations by the graduating class of Fellows.

 Guest lecturers included:

  • Jeff Speck (co-author of Suburban Nation), on “TND Principles and Techniques”
  • Peter Katz (author of The New Urbanism: Toward and Architecture of Community) on “Form-Based Codes”
  • Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk (town planner for Seaside and dean of the University of Miami School of Architecture), on “The Principles of the Charter of the New Urbanism”
  • Tim Hernandez, on “Home: New Urban Residential Development in Cities and Suburbs”
  • Vince Graham
  • Nathan Norris
  • Allison Ude.

Fellows took walking tours of the towns of Seaside, Rosemary Beach, and WaterColor. The Seaside tour was led by Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, who discussed the early history and development of the town.

In addition to the final presentations by graduating Fellows, the seminar included an in-depth discussion of the 2002 Knight Program charrette, which focused on the Evergreen-Eastridge section of San Jose.

After the seminar, Knight Program Director Charles Bohl and five Knight Fellows went on to tour Haile Village Center in Gainesville, Fl and Celebration in Orlando, FL. In Celebration they met with the town architect and residents.
