THE COUNCIL REPORT PROVIDES IN-DEPTH CASE STUDIES OF  CUTTING-EDGE NEW URBANIST PROJECTS

July 18, 2002—The recently inaugurated Council Report series, published semi-annually, features detailed case studies, critiques and insider views of breakthrough New Urbanist projects. This unique publication offers thorough descriptions, insightful commentary, and full-color plans and photos of projects by the nation’s leading practitioners. Multiple commentators for each project provide a depth and variety of peer review uncommon in publications on new development.

Council Report I features the New Urbanist greenfield towns Celebration, Civano, Haile Village, l’On, Karrow-Nord, Kentlands, King Farm, and Southlake. Commentary is by Charles Bohl, Victor Dover, Andres Duany, Ray Gindroz, John Massengale, Stephanos Polyzoides, Jeff Speck, and 28 others. The publication is 52 large-format pages with color and black and white images.

Council Report II focuses on infill projects by leading New Urbanist firms and includes articles on Hope VI projects, live/work development, plazas, and more. Projects discussed include Aqua, South Prescott in Ocean View, Westlake in St. Croix, and more. Reviewers include Bill Dennis, Andres Duany, Ray Gindroz, Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, Robert Steuteville, Peter Swift, John Torti, and 18 others. The publication is 40 large-format pages with color and black and white images.

The Council Report is based on the semi-annual meeting of the Council of the Congress for the New Urbanism (CNU). At the Council meetings, leading New Urbanists present projects to juries of their peers who offer critiques before opening up discussion to the audience. The Council meeting is “a new type of forum for the Congress of the New Urbanism,” according to Andres Duany, a founder of the Congress of the New Urbanism.

The Council Report is published by The Town Paper, and is sponsored primarily by the Knight Program in Community Building at University of Miami School of Architecture.

The Council Report is available in select bookstores. To order it directly, send name, address and $17 check or money order payable to The Knight Program in Community Building, P.O. Box 249178, Coral Gables, FL 33124. (For international orders, send an additional $3.) For questions on the Council Report, call 305.284.4420 or e-mail knight@arc.miami.edu.
