Urbanism up close

Want to remake a neighborhood or learn more about New Urbanism?

The folks at the Urban Art Commission and Urban Land Institute will host a series of free lectures on the topics next week.

The first lecture will be at noon Tuesday and will focus on how the healthcare industry can produce healthier neighborhoods.

At 5:30 Tuesday, the Memphis District Council of the Urban land Institute is hosting a forum by Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, dean of the University of Miami School of Architecture and principal in the firm Duany Plater-Zyberk. On Wednesday, experts will give an introduction on charrette planning. A charrette is an intense period of design activity. On July 20, experts will talk about the benefits of walkable communities and how best to design and build them. For details, call 525-0801.
