Popular ideas

Here are some ideas that surfaced repeatedly throughout the charrette. All will be addressed in the Knight team's final report.

• Affordable housing: This is a neighborhood where many families double up, or rent out rooms, to meet the mortgage or rent. They want more affordable housing nearby, including high density housing to increase affordability.

• Distinctive architecture: People are tired of everything new looking the same. Vietnamese, Latino and other groups want new buildings to reflect their heritage.

• Walkability: Loud and clear, people said they want to be able to walk to parks, schools, shopping and mass transit.

• Gathering places: People want meeting and celebration spaces. Some would like them to be culture-specific, but most felt that public spaces in multicultural Evergreen should be inclusive.

• Open space: Neighbors want usable open space and indoor recreation facilities, including an ice arena to replace the one the mall plans to close.
