A highly recognized, diverse and committed faculty create an energetic and productive
program. Students share in the investigations of faculty through research and practice,
and participate fully in the life of the school. This close collaboration among students
and faculty has produced internationally acclaimed work, as well as some of the country's
leading young designers, and continues to carry the school's reputation forward as a
significant participant in the natural architectural panorama.
In addition to the resident faculty, the School of Architecture draws upon a cadre of
associated faculty recognized for their professional contributions. The school also
attracts distinguished visiting scholars, such as Visiting Professors
Vincent Scully and Catherine Lynn, who
share the growing consensus that the building of community is the primary challenge facing
the modern city.
Faculty: With a total population of 300 students, 24 full-time faculty and 20
associated faculty, collaborative associations among faculty and students are the norm. Of
the 24 full-time faculty, 72% are involved in professional practice, 75% have terminal
degrees in the discipline and the remaining 25% have terminal degrees in related fields,
including fine art, art history or planning. The faculty generally teaches one core studio
and one elective studio, one required lecture and one elective lecture course each
semester, guaranteeing a diverse range of participation across the curriculum. The faculty
is renowned in many areas of expertise but their focus remains on teaching and mentoring.
Students select a faculty mentor who acts as a guide and counselor throughout the five
years. University of Miami students rely on close faculty associations in order to further
develop and grow as architects.
Visiting Lecturers
and Critics: The School Lecture Series includes speakers on a wide variety of
topics and is coordinated with the Visiting Critics Program. The program aims to bring
outstanding studio critics to the School to conduct senior studios. Recent
Visiting Critics

the University of Bologna as well as Visiting Faculty Miriam Gusevich, a 1996/97 Loeb
Fellow at Harvard University and Stephanos Polyzoides and Elizabeth Moule, Architects
& Urbanists of Los Angeles. In addition to Distinguished Visiting Professor Vincent
Scully and Visiting Professor Catherine Lynn, Visiting Scholars have included Rafael
