ARCHIVE  OF  THE  NEW  URBANISM

MISSION STATEMENT
The Archive of the New Urbanism is intended to provide a record of the initiation and evolution of the New Urbanism as seen in projects, articles, books, research, compendia, notes, and other materials.

The New Urbanism is an interdisciplinary movement whose goals are to promote urban reinvestment and alternatives to suburban sprawl. The principles of the movement were articulated in 1994 in the Charter of the New Urbanism.

DESCRIPTION OF CONTENTS
The Archive Collection includes drawings, project folios, books and manuscripts, periodical publications, articles, correspondence, videos, CDs, and DVDs, and other reference material related to New Urbanist theory, writing, and design. The Archive was established by Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk, dean of the University of Miami School of Architecture, who wrote to all members of the Congress of the New Urbanism in January 2002 to solicit material for the collection. The series nomenclature was developed in January 2004 by Wyn Bradley and Christina Miller with the assistance of University of Miami Richter Library Archivist Craig Likness and University of Miami School of Architecture Dean Elizabeth Plater-Zyberk.

As might be expected much of the material can be filed under several series. Thus, as much key word information as possible is included in each item description to allow for a key word search. For instance, charrette publications may be found under Series I:  Project, Plans, and Codes or Series XIII: Firms and Institutions, so they should be sought under both Series. The reason for this is that the records of a project may take many forms and be produced by many sources or firms. Similarly, one firm may produce many projects. Filing them together facilitates study of the firm’s oeuvre.

At the beginning of each Series, a short description of its contents appears. Storage occurs in document cases of several sizes. The following key indicates how objects are stored. Documents are held within boxes. All boxes hold folders (F), which tend to hold loose papers or papers of a similar subject, and items (I), usually bound items which can stand alone. Large drawings/objects and tubes (T) are stored in flat files (FF).  For now, (FF) materials are held in a large, non-archival box. While the current organization anticipates growth, future submittals may require reorganization of a Series or Subseries, and editing of this document.
