U-SoA’s modeling and fabrication facilities provide students the opportunity to turn their design projects into 3D models, allowing them to elaborate on the techniques learned in design studio, construction technology, materials, lighting and structure courses. General design studio assignments and specific research projects are pursued during a regularly scheduled period under the supervision of a full time Shop Director and student staff assistants.

Immediately adjacent to the design studios, the modeling and fabrication facilities occupy approximately 1500 square feet and include both digital and analogue fabrication equipment. Along with traditional wood working tools and machinery, students have access to tech such as 3D printers, laser cutters and CNC milling.

General Resources

The Fabrication Lab at the Thomas P. Murphy Design Studio Building (TPMDSB), has two new Universal Laser machines (already installed), in addition to the two existing laser machines. The new machines will have larger cutting tables (24” x 36”) and more powerful laser tubes. There will be a new 24” x 36” template to the Fab Lab website in addition to the current 18” x 36”.  1/8” nominal thickness MDF sheets will be available in both sizes at the Fab Lab.

There are four new Ultimaker F.D.M. 3D printers. Two are Ultimaker 3 Extended and two are Ultimaker S5, a very recent model and the largest FDM printer-to-date by Ultimaker.

All have dual extruders and will have white PLA as printing material and PVA as support material. The Z-350 powder printer will also be available at the TPMDSB Fab Lab.

U-SoA is also actively sourcing a robotic arm to be installed at the lab as soon as possible.

At the Model Shop, we are adding a new ShopBot PRS Alpha CNC in addition to the existing CNC. The new machine has a 48” x 96” bed, a 14” Z axis, a more powerful spindle and faster travel speeds. It is also equipped with an automatic 10 tool changer and a hold down vacuum system. Fab Lab team is currently in the last phases of the assembly process. The existing CNC “Buddy” is currently available; the size of the bed is its original 24” x 48”.   

The Fab lab team is also placing the final touches on the electrical, telecom and ventilation ducting and estimate that the new Fab Lab will be fully operational by September 24, 2018.

The Model Shop has also expanded to include “Studio 24” located at room 140, building 35. It will be opened 24/7 to U-SoA students who have completed the Safety Training Level 1 at the Model Shop.

Studio 24 will have 11 work stations, all equipped with various hand tools, a drill/driver, materials and accessories. We have also equipped Studio 24  with the existing famous clamp rack along with additional new clamps.

We estimate that Studio 24 will be fully operational by September 24, 2018.
